By His Side

Max is now in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) where he is being cared for one-on-one by a nurse. He is able to open his eyes but they are keeping him fairly sedated with morphine and 1 other drug to help him relax. His first nurse (Erin) was one of his first nurses last time we were here which is great.

In many ways, it seems similar to last time... the environment, the busyness, the small babies hooked up to many many big machines. The sights and sounds are very hard to take in. However, Max seems so different than last time... he is much bigger now and he has way less tubes, lines, etc. I think the fact that they removed his breathing tube in the operating room (OR) was a big help. Plus he is not restrained to the bed this time! At least not yet anyway! You can see the comparison here:

All the tubes and lines from his surgery in Feb 2013.
I will try and get a better picture but you can obviously see the difference.
We are so happy to be back by his side, able to hold his hand, stroke his hair and tell him how much we love him and are proud of how strong he is. We will keep you posted on how the coming days go but please keep praying for him to recover quickly. Here are a few pics from our "reunion" a few minutes ago...

A mom and her son... priceless.

My precious baby Max. 6 weeks until we can wrestle again!
On a side note, Abbie's mom and dad (Bob and Debbie Shelton) are here with us in Edmonton and we have moved ourselves from the hotel (near the hospital) to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH - which is about 10 minutes away). Abbie and I don't anticipate spending too much time there but it will be a great place to catch up on some much needed rest at some point. It is an incredible facility with so much to offer families that are going through a difficult time. More to come later on the RMH.

  1. SO good to see you together again! He looks pretty good for all he's accomplished today! Those angels and nurses must be taking good care of him. A speedy recovery is definitely next up on the prayer list.
