Status Update

Max was fairly restful overnight however when he woke up he was quite irritated. Not much was able to calm him down besides his mama, so Abbie was by his side the whole night!!! I was able to rest a little bit because the social worker was able to get us a parent room which is very close to PICU and has a bed in it.

Although it was looking good to be moved from the PICU today some time & also move him towards eating actual food, this has now changed. There is a collection of fluid around the top of Max's heart/trachea area and this fluid is not draining through the chest tube. They have done several echocardiograms already (last night and today) and another chest x-ray. Dr. Ross (surgeon) was by this morning too have a look also.

The plan is to remain in PICU and off of food for at least another 12 hours to assess.
  • Worse case scenario, they take him to the OR, open his chest up again and drain the fluid
  • Best case scenario, the fluid drains on its own as he moves around a little bit today
The concern is that the fluid could cause pressure on the heart (cardiac tamponade) but his vital signs show NO signs of this which is good.

Pray for this to resolve on its own so that no more surgery/anaesthesia is required.

Max is also very itchy, likely as a result of the morphine so they are trying a different narcotic now.

Max is noticeably starving and thirsty. The few times that he was able to drink overnight was both hilarious and sad. Sad because the second that we would make him stop drinking, we would start shaking and fighting for just one more sip! Reminded me so much of a drug addict just needing one more hit! Hilarious because if you know how independent and particular Max his, he would muster up the strength to say "Max Do It!" in the most groggy voice. He wanted to be the one to hold the cup and straw!!! So cute that it made everyone smile a little bit!!!!!

  3. Praying that his body would kick in and start taking care of the extra fluid. Also praying for comfort from itching and that his little tummy wouldn't grumble. Father distract Max from all that is going on in his little body and provide him with a measure of joy and peace from the amazing and loving parents you've provided for him. Provide Cam and Abbie with perserverance, wisdom and strength....
